BTC does not have preservatives and does not have artificial ingredients. Preservatives kill what makes food alive, making it less beneficial to you. As we do not use preservatives and artificial ingredients expect the taste to be slightly different over time. Less “conformity” also means it’s much better for you.
Yes, BTC contains less than 20ppm of gluten, which is the USA and EU definition for Gluten Free. BTC is made with tools and machines that do not handle ingredients containing gluten. Only 2 ingredients contain gluten in the building and they are handled on other production lines to avoid any possible cross-contamination.

What is Gluten? Gluten is a protein found in the grains wheat, barley, and rye. It can also be used as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizer or thickening agent.

Over the last few years there has been an increasing awareness of Celiac disease (gluten intolerance) and gluten sensitivity. In addition to people who suffer from gluten intolerance and sensitivities, many people just feel healthier and more energetic when they eat a gluten-free, whole foods diet.

For more information on Celiac and gluten sensitivity visit celiac.org or gluten.net.
Whether you are fueling for a sport or just nourishing to get through your day, BTC is convenient, delicious, gluten-free bars made with the best quality ingredients.

The FDA considers coconut a tree nut, therefore we cannot claim BTC is nut free.

BTC is made in Canada in a strictly peanut- and tree-nut-free factory, under Health Canada official definition: BTC is made in a factory free from Peanuts and Tree nuts (almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, walnuts). Health Canada official definition The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) states: “Coconut is not a botanical nut; it is classified as a fruit, even though the Food and Drug Administration recognizes coconut as a tree nut. While allergic reactions to coconut have been documented, most people who are allergic to tree nuts can safely eat coconut. If you are allergic to tree nuts, talk to your allergist before adding coconut to your diet.”

Yes, BTC is GMO free. We do not have the GMO-free project stamp yet. Guarana and Maca come from regions where GMO is not used and getting GMO certification on those ingredients would have a very negative impact on our pricing. Peru, where the maca plant grows, has a 10-year GMO ban (starting 2012). More Info: Peru GMO ban
Our bars are a great source of energy, but we would not recommend them for children or pregnant women. BTC contains Maca, a root vegetable from Peru with therapeutic properties, and Guarana which has stimulant properties coming from the seeds guaranine. Although it is considered safe for adults, there has not been thorough medical testing on these ingredients for children and pregnant women.
Dairy or milk products/derivatives are common ingredients and sources of protein in energy bars. Dairy ingredients may show up as whey or casein on the ingredient label. Although dairy can be a good source of protein, some people have trouble digesting dairy, so our bars are dairy
free, made with the best-quality ingredients
Yes, BTC bars are 100% vegan. Please do check our labels prior to purchase and email us with questions if you are uncertain.
Yes. BTC Bars are certified by Montreal Kosher. This is the LAIT-Dairy MK icon you see on our communications.
It is the official Montreal Kosher label certification
BTC bars are not baked. We boil the brown rice syrup mix to evaporate the water, the other ingredients are then incorporated without cooking—we use a refrigeration system.

What does “raw” mean? When food is labeled as raw, it means that none of the ingredients have been heated to a temperature above 118°F to preserve all the plant enzymes that would be destroyed by the extreme heat of cooking.

Why eat raw food? We are not raw food advocates as such but the BTC base is raw. Raw food advocates say heat changes the molecular structure of food, and destroys most or all of the food’s beneficial enzymes and renders its nutrients mostly unusable. Enzymes help the body properly digest and assimilate food for optimal nutritional value. Although the body is capable of making enzymes it is believed to have a finite amount, and over time, the amount of available enzymes diminishes. Studies show that consuming living enzymes (i.e. raw food) can help conserve the body’s energy, reduce disease-causing stress and support a healthier digestive system.

Our bars have no preservatives and are not baked. We use refrigeration and seal them straight after. This allows us to have a long enough shelf life for this category of products. There is no health risk of consumption until 18 months, but for product freshness we stamp it 15 months from date of production. The expiration date is on the package and best of date of your order will vary.

Amazon.com guarantees 50 days from purchase date. Amazon.com does not operate First In First Out, meaning it is hard for us to evaluate what they are shipping for us.

We do not use preservatives, so taste will change over time. Due to our production process he ingredients will blend together over time, but the quality of the end product isn’t altered. See next question “What will BTC taste like over time?”

BTC bars are plant-based and have no preservatives. Using natural ingredients means the taste will change overtime. They may come a little harder, but this does not alter the quality. When the weather is cold, due to the high chocolate content, the bars may get harder. Some of our customer heat them for few seconds in a microwave to soften.
We make BTC in Canada in a strictly peanut- and tree-nut-free factory, under Health Canada official definition. See “Is BTC nut free?”

Better Than Coffee does not fortify our bars with vitamins and minerals.  We use the best quality ingredients, the nutrients are inherent from our ingredients.
Other Questions
We do not know for sure. Guarana seed extract is a caffeine source and would show up in drug test if caffeine-like substances are being tested for. It is your responsibility to check with the appropriate or designated athletics staff before using any substance. We take no liability for passing or not passing any form of drug tests.
Guarana is bitter and a challenge to blend when you do not add a lot of sugar or salt to hide it. We have tried many different flavors, without masking the natural taste with sugar, and have succeeded with 4 flavors. However, we are always trying new combinations, so expect more flavors in the future.
Unfortunately, high shipping costs prevent us from sending samples directly to consumers. However, we regularly provide samples locally in San Francisco.
